Last Eats (Treats!) in Calgary

That’s right, the food never ends. Nothing will stop me from sampling Calgary’s best. With only half a day left before we headed back home, Joe and I hit up three of the hottest shops for treats! Yann Haute Patisserie specializes in macarons and special occasion cakes. Anywhere that says they specialize in macarons, I’m down to try. A few blocks northwest from there, Jelly Modern Doughnuts sells the newest trending baked good since the cupcake made its way out of bakeries and on to the streets. Last, but definitely not least, Village Ice Cream, making their ice cream locally in-shop with plenty of flavors to make everyone happy.

Yann Haute Patisserie

Located in a residential neighborhood, we almost passed Yann Haute Patisserie without realizing it. Taking a second look, however, the bright yellow house is hard to miss if you knew it was in a house in the first place.

Miniature window displays aligned the back wall of the small shop, making me feel like I was transported back to Paris. Assorted pastries and freshly baked croissants were also available but I headed straight towards the macarons.

With twelve different flavors to choose from, it’s a very difficult decision. So I got one of each! My favorite was the blackcurrant and violet, unique and bold flavors, with a sugared exterior. Although no match for Paris’ Laduree, Yann Haute Patisserie is probably the closest I can get in Canada.

Located near Calgary’s 17th Ave, Jelly Modern Doughnuts is breaking way with mixing a plain doughnut and sophisticated flavors. Although pricey for a single doughnut (Tim Horton lovers will cringe), I had to see what the hype was about.

Hot pink chairs and balloons immediately attracted me to the store but once I got over the decor, rows and rows of gourmet doughnuts were staring back at me.

Thanksgiving Special

Check out their website for more information about the menu. Different flavors are featured on different days, with only their most popular flavors available regularly. They even have a doughnut of the month, October’s being pumpkin cheesecake. Yum! Being a long weekend, there were large orders of the Thanksgiving special 4 x four fall flavors, packaged and waiting for pick-up. I wasn’t on the ball enough to pre-order, so I missed out.

There were only ten doughnut varieties by the time I got there, so I naturally ordered one of each in the mini-size (also available in full size) with duplicates of the pumpkin cheesecake and maple bacon ones to make a full dozen for friends and family. I only got a bite of three of them (coconut, pumpkin cheesecake, and maple bacon) but they were delicious! Be sure to try it out and take a stroll down 17th Ave for some shopping!

Village Ice Cream

The absolute last stop before going home: Village Ice Cream. Before I go into how delicious this place was, I have one criticism. This place is in the middle of nowhere. Or what seems like nowhere. It’s a little south of downtown and it’s pretty close to the casino but it’s hidden away in this little dead-end street behind an electrical power whatsit. If it wasn’t for social media, I don’t know how else I would know about this place, nevertheless find it! They have a parking lot attached so if  you’re navigating with GPS or whatever map you have on your phone, just go directly to the address.

Other than that minor hiccup, I was happy! Made in-store, their ice cream was creamy and very strong in flavor! Freshly made waffle cones fill the store with a melt-your-knees smell as you view their large menu. They also have seasonal flavors and sorbet. Not sure what to get? You can try samples of every flavor and go from there! That’s basically what we did.

Salted Caramel and Guide’s Mint

They were able to do half a scoop of each for us when we decided on two flavors. Being stuffed from grazing throughout the afternoon, that’s all we could manage to stomach. I’m not sure what scoop they’re using but it’s one scoop is a pretty big one! We got the salted caramel, after the girl told us that was their most popular, and the Guide’s mint. The salted caramel was very sweet (as it should be!) which Joe liked. I preferred the Guide’s mint, seeing that it’s actually my favorite cookie. Anybody ever see Girl Guides anymore? I haven’t bought cookies from them in years… Anyways. I’m sure I would have appreciated the ice cream more if the weather was scorching hot. I wonder how they’ll survive the winter months. If you’re craving for something cold though, this is it!
