The Burg

In case anybody ever wondered what the heck happened to me, I’m still here. Still eating! Just.. not posting. Woops. I have a lot to catch up on (two months worth of posts)… but that’s okay right? Right-o. I’ll skip straight to what I ate yesterday to make things a little more exciting.

For those of you who followed me from the start, you might recall that my first blog post ever was about my meal at 104 St Grill. Shame that they didn’t last very long but the space is now open as The Burg. It’s been over a month and with only large posters of drool worthy looking burgers on the exterior, I was pretty psyched that they finally opened! The opening date was supposed to be June 17 but it was pushed back to the 19th. Then the 20th last time I saw the posters. ‘Lo and behold, it must have opened in time for the weekend because I saw photos on Instagram already up! The inside is re-done with most of the old booths gone and replaced with more pub-friendly seating, high bar stools, and looked a whole lot brighter than it’s past. Alex and I went for a late lunch yesterday so it wasn’t packed at all and seeing a delayed opening, I think most people are unaware that they’re even open.

The menu is a lot more extensive than I thought it would be! Multiple appetizers, plenty of feature burgers and even a dessert menu to boot. Mmm, lemon tart!

Build Your Own Burger

For the DIY-er, there’s even a build your own burger menu, a concept that seems to be taking over a lot of burger joints. Some of the toppings though are pretty interesting: blackberry gastrique, triple cream brie, hummus? Fancy.

Blood Orange Creamsicle Milkshake

Knowing that even one burger would fill me right up, I opted out of a milkshake but Alex couldn’t pass up on it. He ordered the blood orange creamsicle milkshake, made from gelato. Nom!

After ordering just ice water, I realized I didn’t even check out the drinks menu. Some of the drinks actually look enticing! Too bad they don’t have a patio for the summer but I can imagine having drinks during a big game. Gotta try out the Caesar next time I’m there.

Bison Burger

Our burgers took awhile to make it out, something about the cooktop being turned off and had to be turned back on. It wasn’t a horribly long wait though but I appreciated our server for even mentioning it. All burgers come as is and sides are ordered separately, making your burger alone anywhere from $9 to $20.

Alex ordered the Burg, their signature burger, stuffed with in-house cured and smoked bacon, cheese, and jalapeno, topped off with their signature sauce, nice and crispy onion rings, and your standard lettuce and tomato. I didn’t get a bite of it, but when asked if it was good Alex simply nodded. When asked if it was amazing or the best burger he’s ever had, he shook his head. I asked about the signature sauce, and he proclaimed it was more of a slightly spicy mayo. Enough said for Alex! He finished the burger though, no problem but seemed to appreciate his gelato milkshake more so than the burger.

I was previously deciding between the “Grilled Cheeseburger”, an homage to my favorite grilled cheese but opted for the bison burger instead. It was nice to see other options on the menu besides beef: a choice of bison, turkey, couple of chicken, halibut, and a vegan burger on the menu. Something for everyone! What made me chose the bison burger though was the blackberry gastrique in combination with a roasted garlic aioli. Yum! To top it off, served on a brioche bun versus an onion bun. I enjoyed my burger, cooked to medium-well. The sauces definitely made the burger shine though, as well as the use of fresh (and plenty!) ingredients. All the burgers are roughly the same size (aside from the “Man Among Boys” two patty) and for a lunch, it’s quite a lot to eat. I managed to finish 3/4 before feeling stuffed. Thankfully, our waitress nodded in agreement when she cleared the table and said she barely finished a burger as well. It’s not just me people!

To wrap things up, would I come again? Yes. Location is excellent and I think The Burg is happily welcomed by the 104St community. With nothing like it in the area, I think it’s a great addition downtown. Hopefully they will stay for awhile! Pricewise, it makes sense. This isn’t your typical run of the mill burger, it’s quite large, they’re smack in downtown, and their focus is on fresh ingredients. I’ll definitely try out some appetizers next time and have a drink. With such a large seating area and TV’s all around the bar area, I think it will fit right in with Kelly’s Pub a few doors away and Mercer Tavern down a few blocks. I’ll admit that the bison burger wasn’t the best burger I’ve ever had either, but I’ll give it a few more rounds to judge that!

After-post edit: They do offer a gluten-free bun as well as a fistful of gluten-free appetizers. Food for all!
