Farrow Sandwiches

Farrow Sandwiches organized a pop-up event at Edmonton’s Three Boars Eatery yesterday, giving Edmonton locals a sneak peek at their sandwich offerings. Set to open April 2, 2014 and neighbor to their pop-up host, I couldn’t wait to try their food. Last time I was this excited about a sandwich was when Drift Food Truck first hit the streets and trust me, that was a long time ago.

To be honest, I don’t know a lot about them! By the time I woke up Joe and yelled, “ZOMG, they only have 100 sandwiches each, GET UP NOWZ!” and drove down to the Garneau area, this was my view. I knew it. I knew people liked their sandwiches and when you throw a vegan option in the mix, people will go nuts. And no doubt that with Three Boars Eatery backing them up, it had to be good. Remember when they hosted the Knifewear Pop-Up? A hit! So my hopes of talking to the minds of Farrow Sandwiches for more information were out the door but that’s okay, I still got a sandwich!

Only over half-hour past opening, it took us around 15 minutes to get to the front of the line. The beautiful Three Boars Eatery had opened it’s doors and seats were filled top to bottom. The open kitchen showed the busy team hustling out sandwiches through the window. More sandwiches, more sandwiches!

Here’s the pop-up menu. Floating around the Twittersphere and on their Facebook page, I already knew that one of those Speedy Gonzalez had my name written all over it. Joe decided to get the Breakfast Sandwich, seeing that being up at noon on a Sunday is breakfast to him.

For those of you who don’t know Joe or follow the blog, he likes soup-y things. Sandwiches are not a meal of choice. He opened his sandwich, peered at the innards, looked across the street to McDonald’s, and dug in. I anxiously waited for his verdict thinking this might be one of those meals that he refers back to when all things fail and I’m wrong. Not so! First couple bites, he said it tastes like a breakfast sandwich… and a few more bites determined that it was “pretty good.” On Joe’s ranking system (which I’m not entirely sure is linear), I believe “pretty good” means that it’s actually pretty good. I took a bite myself and determined the same. I’m not usually a fan of English muffins as they’re usually dry, but this wasn’t the case with Farrow’s. The sausage was moist, egg was fried well. The aioli could have used a bit more tarragon as the flavor was lost on me, and if you’re going to advertise a sriracha catsup, better make it more sriracha than ketchup in my opinion! But overall, a great sandwich!

Opening up my own package, the Speedy Gonzalez did not disappoint in appearance. Bright, beautiful colors, and what looked like nice, crispy pieces of deep-fried avocado. Mmm, this was worth the wait! Mixed in with pico de gallo, red cabbage, cilantro, and a chipotle vegan cream, this sandwich was superb. A little confused as the menu stated a Portuguese torta vehicle and I’m no expert, but pretty sure this was just a standard baguette. Either way it was like Mexican tacos and Vietnamese submarine flavors fused into one. I’ve never had deep-fried avocado before either, but this was pure genius. No surprise here that this sandwich was the first to sell out.

At $9 a sandwich today, I’d say the Speedy Gonzalez was worth it. The Breakfast Sandwich, ehhhhh, you’ve got McDonald’s right across the street and it was considerably smaller than the other sandwiches. Overhearing other parties, the BLT seemed to be a favorite amongst many. I’m excited for their permanent location and hope there are more sandwich creations to come!
