Sugared and Spiced Baked Goods: Dreams of Making Edmonton Sweeter

Now a brick and mortar, Sugared and Spiced Baked Goods is now sweeter than ever. Custom cakes and delicious baked goods by owners, Amy and Jeff Nachtigall.

I remember meeting Amy and Jeff for the first time a few years ago. Amy was currently at Cafe Bicyclette and just starting her Sugared and Spiced Baked Goods brand, and Jeff was manning a table full of pies. It was Pi Day and I was soon be in possession of a pecan pie, one of the best I’ve ever had. Back then, Jeff had a full time job and was my pie handler and Amy was full of dreams: baking what she wanted to bake and opening up her own shop. I remember wishing them luck and looked forward to that day. It’s a dream that’s finally here.

It’s hard to believe that conversation was only over a little two years ago. Since then, I’ve continued to try everything Amy baked. Cookies, pies, scones, meringues. When one of my best friends panicked and needed a baker for her wedding (planning wasn’t her forte), Amy came to our rescue. When Cake Club launched, I eagerly became a part of their first round of subscribers. Chocolate mocha, carrot cake, and lemon meringue quickly became my flavours of choice. Sometimes the cakes were delivered by Jeff, or most often than not, I’d stop by their quaint Highlands home and awkwardly knock on their door, arms stretched and ready for my cake.

If you have a sweet tooth and live in Edmonton, chances are you’ve seen Amy’s cakes. They’re drop dead gorgeous and drool worthy. It’s a service catered towards those who want a stress-free year of remembering occasions. Book three dates and your cake will be ready. Anniversaries, birthdays, random day, it doesn’t matter. It’s a fantastic subscription.

Since Cake Club took off, Amy and Jeff launched a crowdfunding campaign with ATB boostR, raising just shy of $57,000, an amount nearly three times the amount they were asking for a storefront. The bakery and cafe faces a little alleyway, tucked south of Old Strathcona’s Farmer’s Market. It’s a nook that’s only locals would care to venture, a hidden gem that won’t be hidden for long.

The bakery is a quick stop shop but also serves Calgary’s Phil & Sebastian coffee. Baked goods like cinnamon sticky buns, macarons, and cookies are ready to be enjoyed. If you’re in a bind, mini cakes are available straight from the display cases although I’d highly recommend joining the Cake Club if this is a recurring problem.

Most recently I picked up my own birthday cake. (It’s a sad thought when all the cakes I’ve ever ordered were for other people. I want my own cake!) Passionfruit curd layered between vanilla cake, gold-leaf ombre buttercream, and topped with meringue and macarons… behold, cake of my dreams!
